Are you tired of feeling sick and tired? Are you lacking motivation to get to the gym? Are you just unsure of how to begin a workout routine? Keep reading to find out how you can begin to slowly incorporate a workout routine into your everyday life!
Many people struggle with making the gym a habit in their everyday life! The “I have no time” excuse comes up often, but it’s time we make our health a priority and start taking action! Studies show people who work out regularly are way less likely to have risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and mortality.
The first thing you have to do for making fitness and working out a habit in your everyday life is acknowledging that you have to begin somewhere and that you are ready. Realizing that working out and being healthy is important to you will help you move forward with taking action. The only person who can truly get you to work out is you; not a spouse, friend, family-member, or anyone else. Getting started starts with your readiness level being a 10! Just do the dang thing!
The biggest tip I have for making working out a regular routine in your everyday life is finding a gym, personal trainer, or fitness class that is close to home and near you!
The likelihood of you attending a gym, training session, or fitness class really depends on the distance between your home, work, and gym! If you choose a class that is over 20 minutes out of your way on your drive home, then you are more than likely going to feel too tired to go after work. If it is 30 mins in the other direction, then you are probably not going to want to wake up an extra hour or so to try to go before work. Distance really does amount to the likelihood of you sticking to something.
The key is finding a gym, trainer, or class that is nearby. My rule of thumb is usually 10-15 minutes away from home, max. My gym is about 5 minutes away and most of my clients live right near the gym I train out of. I will say, there are a couple SUPER disciplined clients who do drive 30+ minutes each way to come train with me, so if you are like them and can really commit to a drive, then go for it! Myself, personally, will not drive over 10 minutes away for a workout. I’ve tried and my motivation is just not there to drive far.
The next step to sticking to a workout routine is to stick to a regular schedule! If you are all over the place and do not have designated days to workout, then the chances of you sticking to a routine is less likely. Consistency is key for long-term success!
It is best to schedule your workouts each week! If you know Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays after work you feel energized enough to hit the gym, then block out those days in your schedule each week. If Tuesday and Thursday mornings have a later start time for work, then plan those days to get your workout class in.
Consistency with a schedule allows you to make fitness and working out a weekly habit in your life.
In order to keep you motivated, set fitness goals that will correlate with your new-found gym routine. Maybe set a weight loss goal or strength goal for each month. Creating small goals along the way can be a fun thing to do to help you feel motivated and accountable.
All in all, starting a fitness routine does not have to be that complicated. Find a gym, personal trainer, of fitness class that is nearby. Schedule workouts in your weekly planner, and set goals to keep you motivated.
Working out is an amazing way to relieve stress, anxiety, and get the endorphins pumping!
